Hi Kevin,

This question comes up from time to time in the Lounge. The short answer is VerticalResponse does not provide or sell lists and you cannot mail to lists you purchase using VerticalResponse. VR is a strictly permission-based email service provider, which means you can only mail to recipients who have opted-in to receive your emails. Thanks Chris, i guess i am in the wrong place. I thought that this site provided email lists to send out. I read the other post and it looks like i wasn't the only one who thought this. Thanks Kevin

Good Morning Kevin,
If I were you I wouldn't even consider buying or renting a list. There are many list sellers out there more than willing part you from your money and sell names and email addies to you but from a practical standpoint you do not have any idea how the names have been harvested, how many addresses are still good, you do not know if there are even remotely interested in your product. The big thing to condsider is the legal part, the federal government has gotten tough on bulk unsolicited emails. http://www.twowriters.net/spam.htm is a good place to read about spam and the law. Another thing to consider: when you send out unsolicited emails using your company email addy, like as an example if your web presence is widget.com and your email addy is Kevin.Doane@Widget.com you run a great risk of getting your web site backlisted as a spammer. Get many people hitting the "spam button" on you and you could get your email addy as well as your domain name blacklisted forever, it would automatically be blocked by many spam filters never to be heard from again. Federal spam laws are getting tougher so think again about not taking the time to build an optin list on your own.

Hi Dennis,

I don't know where you would get a list, however I do know that purchased or rented lists produce notoriously disappointing ROIs because emails sent to those lists are, by definition, a form of spam (i.e., the recipients don't know you and did not ask to receive the email you are sending to them).

But the main point here is that if you purchase or rent a list you cannot mail to that list using VerticalResponse and uploading such a list would be a violation of the terms you agree to when uploading lists to your VR account. This is covered in greater detail in the link to the forum post above in this thread, "Can't I Just Buy a List," and on the list upload page in your VR account.
