Hello Peter,
Let me begin by saying...."Welcome to the Jungle..." There is too many get rich type companies out there right now that promise to help you market, build email list, and you can make money at it too. As my Dad says....if it is too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your gut feelings and keep your budget low. See actual results with hits to your site and the trick is to keep them coming back. Another idea is to read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Awesome marketing book that shows you how and why things "tip" to become successful. Best wishes.
Tammie
In my many years of experience running my own business, the most important pieces of advice I can offer when it comes to marketing are:
1. Be patient - marketing takes time. Its NOT a quick fix and you will almost never get immediate results, no matter how much money you throw at it.
2. Keep it consistent - no matter how big or small your marketing budget is and what marketing channels and plans you use, make sure that you keep them consistent and solid. Keep testing and improving, but no matter what, keep at it and make sure that even if your only channel available is one little online forum, make sure you are a constant and reliable presence.
3. Live your brand - Seth Godin (make a habit of reading his blog!) constantly talks about how marketing should not be a seperate endeavour, but rather the embodiment of your business. Everything you do from answering your phone, sending out emails, even to how you deal with complete strangers in your everyday life, should be consistent with your brand and your marketing message.
All the best with your business and please dont hesitate to get in touch if you need any other advice.
